A 1948, Calcutta born, fourth generation soldier, and an alumnus of St Joseph's College, Nanital, Central School, Jalandhar and National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakvasla, Bhupender was commissioned into the Regiment of Artillery of the Indian army in March 1972. During his thirty-seven-year military career, he did seven courses in mountaineering and skiing and served as an instructor in the prestigious High Altitude Warfare School (HAWS). An adventurous life that involved beholding archaic ruins and historic/religious sites in the area/vicinity of activity, coupled with facilities provided by the army helped him develop an interest in antiquity, nature and adventure sports. Sikh history had always fascinated him, but it was not until, he had hung his uniform that he was able to put pen to paper.
