समकालीन साहित्य में आदिवासी, स्त्री, दलित और अल्पसंख्यक समाज की स्थिति पर पुनर्विचार होने लगा है क्योंकि समकालीन साहित्य और समाज में ये तबके दीर्घकाल तक हाशिए पर रहे है। संवैधानिक प्रावधानों के कारण इन वंचित वर्गों के लोगों में अपने संघर्ष के खिलाफ बड़े स्तर पर संघर्ष करने की चेतना विकसित हुई है। जिसे उत्तर आधुनिक शब्दावली में ‘विमर्श’ के नाम से जाना जाता है। हिन्दी साहित्य भी इस बदलते हुए परिवेश से अछूता नहीं है, स्त्री, दलित और आदिवासी लेखन इसका प्रमाण है। इस देश के मूलनिवासियों का लेखन हिंदी के अस्मितावादी विमर्शों में सबसे नवीन है। वर्षों से इस देश के मूलनिवासियों के साहित्य को हाशिए पर रखा गया लेकिन आज मूलनिवासियों का साहित्य नए रूप में उभरकर सामने आ रहा है। भारतीय साहित्य में इस देश के मूलनिवासियों की छवि को गलत रूप में पेश करने की कोशिश की गई है। मैं इस किताब के माध्यम से मूलनिवासियों की बात करते समय कुछ पहलुओं को उठाना चाहती हूँ पहली बात यह है कि इस देश के मूलनिवासियों पर लिखने से पहले उनकी विचारधारा को समझना जरूरी है कि आप उनके साथ कितना न्याय कर पाते है क्योंकि तब ही हम इस देश के मूलनिवासियों की समस्या का समाधान कर सकते है। दूसरी बात यह है कि गैर-मूलनिवासियों द्वारा जो कुछ लिखा जा रहा है, उनका वो लेखन इस देश के मूलनिवासियों के साथ ठीक तरह से न्याय नही कर पा रहा है। आज इस देश के मूलनिवासियों के साहित्य को तोड़-मरोड़कर पेश करनी की कोशिश की जा रही है।
भारतीय संस्कृति और सभ्यता के सब ओर इस देश के मूलनिवासियों की परंपरायें और प्रथायें छाई हुई हैं। फिर भी, इस तथ्य की जानकारी आम लोगों में नहीं है। भारतीय दर्शनशास्त्र, भाषा, एवं रीति-रिवाज में मूलनिवासियों के योगदान के फैलाव और महत्व को अक्सर इतिहासकार और समाजशास्त्रियों के द्वारा कम करके आंका और भुला दिया जाता है।
मूलनिवासियों की सभ्यता, संस्कृति और अधिकारों को इतिहासकारों और समाजशास्त्रियों ने अपनी पुस्तकों या विचारों में प्रस्तुत नहीं किया है, उन्ही मूलनिवासियों की सभ्यता, संस्कृति और अधिकारों की चर्चा इस पुस्तक में की गई है। इस देश के मूलनिवासियों का मनुवादी लोग किस तरह शोषण कर रहे है, इस बात का जिक्र इस पुस्तक में किया गया है और इस पुस्तक में मनुवादियों के धार्मिक आडम्बरों का भी सच उजागर किया गया है।
