मेरी पहली कहानी सन् 1983 में प्रकाशित हुई थी। शीर्षक था, ’’कागज का टुकड़ा’’। तब मैं बीण् एण् द्वितीय वर्ष का छात्र था। वह कहानी किसी स्थानीय समाचार पत्र में छपी थी। मुहल्ले में रहने वाली एक लड़की ने कागज के एक टुकड़े पर कुछ लिखकर चचेरी बहिन के हाथ मेरे पास भेजा था, जिसे दोस्तों ने ’लव लेटर’ का नाम दिया और वह मेरी पहली कहानी की विषयवस्तु बन गया। वह प्रेम का झोंका एकदम आकस्मिक था। जितने तूफानी वेग से आया था, उतने तूफानी वेग के साथ चला भी गया। लड़की की शादी हो गयी लेकिन ’कागज का टुकड़ा’ के बाद मुझे कहानी लिखने की लत लग गयी।
’अश्विनी आहूजा की चुनिन्दा कहानियां’ पुस्तक छपवाने का विचार इसलिए मन में आया क्योंकि मेरी बहुत सी कहानियां इधर उधर बिखरी पड़ी थी जिनमें से कुछ पूर्व के किसी भी कहानी संग्रह में संकलित न हो सकी थी। उन कहानियों को पाठकों की तारीफ मिली थी, कुछ कहानियां पुरस्कृत भी हुईं थी इसलिए उनका संग्रह मेरा साहित्यिक दायित्व था।
इस संग्रह में उन कहानियों को संकलित किया है जो पहले कहीं न कहींे छप चुकी हैं। कुछ कहानियों में थोड़ा बदलाव भी किया है। आशा है पाठकों को संग्रह की सभी कहानियां पसन्द आएंगी। मेरा पाठकों से सविनम्र आग्रह है कि वे इस संग्रह की कहानियों को पढ़कर मुझे अपने मूल्यवान विचारों से अवश्य अवगत कराएं। मैं सयम को धन्य समझूंगा।
